Bat Starfish are important to ecosystems because they are predators so they keep certain populations under control, for example the mussel population. By keeping these populations under control they open up room for other organisms to grow too. In some places people eat certain starfish making them an important food source.
They aren't really all that important to humans other than just being cool to look at and keeping other populations under control. Fishermen usually see them as pests though because they usually get caught up in the nets.
